Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition at LightSpace Studios as part of Bushwick Open Studios (BOS), a three day arts and culture festival from May 31 – June 2, 2013, celebrating the community’s vibrant arts scene with the goal of fostering dialogue and collaboration between local artists and residents. ALLISON PASCHKE creates sculptural and installation work that is interactive. Sometimes movement through space and light affects the piece; sometimes the interaction is directly physical. Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present “im propia”, a solo exhibition of video, performance, photography and installation work by Dominican Republic based artist Raquel Paiewonsky, curated by Robert P. Stack. 

“im propia” speaks of humanity and freedom, through a corporeal symbolism that embodies our experience in the social context but always with an important reference to our natural and instinctive self. Paiewonsky uses the body as a platform that allows her from an intimate place to approach broader topics ranging from social, philosophical or political. In this exhibition she explore personal relationships, childhood, love, stereotypes, nature, diversity.

“I have always been interested in the body as a vessel capable of containing our life experiences within itself, sometimes in mysterious and subtle ways, other times more forcefully.” explains Paiewonsky. “In recent years, my work explores the relationship between our essence and our surroundings, the impact of stereotypes and cultural constructions, always taking as a reference our instinctual selves and the ways in which the primal component of our nature is affected by the new and ever changing contexts of contemporary life.”

Although seldom conveying violence explicitly, Paiewonsky’s work is very much concerned with the veiled but insidious violence that permeates the personal, social and political systems in which we live.

The opening reception for “im propia” is on Thursday, June 20 from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night Providence.  The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, July 14, 2013.

Since 2009, David H. Wells has been recording the human cost of our Great Recession that began the year before by photographing the things people left behind when they abandoned foreclosed homes.

In the Providence photographer’s heartbreaking exhibit “Foreclosed Dreams,” organized by guest curator Viera Levitt at Yellow Peril Gallery (60 Valley St., #5, Providence, through May 12), he documents toys, credit reports, martial arts trophies and family heirlooms abandoned in homes in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, California, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Stack, featuring cutting edge contemporary artists with installations that will temporarily occupy LightSpace Studio’s massive 5,100 square foot cyclorama stages and 28 foot ceiling clearances in Brooklyn, New York, during the run of Frieze New York 2013 from May 11 – 13, 2013.  Peter Davis, Editor in Chief, SCENE (sceneinny.com), is the Host for the opening reception produced by So Chic RSVP on Saturday, May 11, from 7PM – 11PM.  A portion of all sales (10%) will benefit charity:water. 

For some artists, the words WORK HARDER are a mantra of encouragement, pushing them to achieve their creative potential – 110% above and beyond what is expected.  For others, WORK HARDER is nothing more than an admonishment from critics, peers or their inner demons for missing the mark completely.  In short, discouraging words with the power to kill, crush or even destroy an already fragile ego.

“WORK HARDER is not about cynicism or questioning the work ethic of artists,” notes Yellow Peril Curator Robert P. Stack.  “Each installation that will inhabit the same space is from artists whose body of work exemplifies strength, power and independence.  It is this inherent inner-dialogue of pep talk versus admonishment that informs the core of the work exhibited,” he clarifies. “All of us are spurred on by the little men on each shoulder.”

KATHRYN PARKER ALMANAS deals with themes of the human condition and body, often drawing ideas from the medical world. In her most recent work, Almanas has been constructing and photographing visceral tableaux, which incorporate surrogate organs that she makes out of dough, jelly, berries, fruit juices, and other material. RUTH DEALY is interested in the tension between what is seen and what is felt. Her work falls into two major groups: self-portraits and landscapes. DANA DUNHAM desires to hold onto the traditional aspects of black and white film and then crossing it with the alternative process has taken his work and vision to heights that are uniquely his own. The negative, through controlled exposure and development yields the contrast and density that he desires. DIANA JOY is a damaged ‘80s pop icon with the intention of ruling the world in style via ritualistic music video and performance. She will smash your taboos and destroy your pop music. This future beast has a big heart and a broken time machine. Joy is an expert in clothing/costume design and manipulating audio and video and is schooled in performance art, video, mime, and bouffon. About Peter Davis
PETER DAVIS was born and raised in Manhattan. After majoring in painting at Bennington College, he worked at The Andy Warhol Foundation of the Visual Arts. And after interning at Paper during high school and graduating from Bennington, he began a monthly column for Paper chronicling nightlife and fashion and the latest it kids as well as interviewing numerous celebrities from Gwen Stefani to Kelly Slater to Zooey Deschanel. Kim Hastreiter, Paper’s founder and Editor, really discovered Davis and since being nurtured by Hastreiter, Davis has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New York Observer, The Daily Beast and numerous other magazines and newspapers. He was the Features Director of The Daily Front Row and Editor at Large at Paper and VS Senior Editor. After nine months of being the Editor in Chief of Avenue, he left the magazine to start SCENE, a monthly New York based magazine owned by Jared Kushner, who also owns The New York Observer. About Malik So Chic
MALIK SO CHIC is New York City’s Favorite Gender-bending Socialite, fashionista, GAYNGSTA Rapper, Designer of the handbag line Pampered Royale, and founder of So Chic RSVP, a boutique event production agency with concierge and fashion services. So Chic has appeared in various reality TV xprograms, including Vh1′s The T.O. SHOW, Logo’s The  A-List, CW’s High Society and Lifetime’s Dance Moms. When Providence-based photographer David H. Wells set out to document the American foreclosure crisis, he started by snapping photos of workers as they cleaned repossessed houses in California’s central valley in 2009. As he began shooting, though, he found the objects in the houses more compelling than the workers. Since that first trip, his ever-expanding “Foreclosed Dreams” project — which opens at the Yellow Peril Gallery in Providence April 18 — has focused on items, not people. Sandals. Polaroids. Pacifiers. Bullet casings. Karate trophies. Broken chairs. Birthday cards. A crumpled American flag. A rain-soaked book called Bad Beginnings to Happy Endings. And of course the empty houses, themselves, with plywood-boarded windows and countertops dusted with plaster.

“I’m really trying hard to get what I think are the ghosts of the people who used to be in those houses,” Wells says of his excursions into more than 500 homes across 15 states, including Rhode Island. He was speaking from Arizona, where his work on “Dreams” continues. The tech-savvy Wells — who runs a free photo instruction podcast series and blog called “The Wells Point” — responded to my emailed questions by recording webcam videos of himself and summoning photographs onto the screen as he spoke. But Aric hits a sour note with a sculptural head of a lady wired to the handlebars. Its eyes are closed and its mouth open in apparent ecstasy, but there’s something creepy about it. Its placement could suggest that the whole bike is the woman’s body or that the head is a trophy. The mouth is smeared with red clown paint and the eyes crossed out, which in cartoon lingo can mean dead.

It’s a centerpiece of “Reverse Cowgirl,” a roundup of 11 Providence artists at Yellow Peril Gallery (60 Valley St, Providence, through April 14), and demonstrates both its pleasures and drawbacks. “It’s important to strip away any veneers of shame and repulsion surrounding sex in art and take a more critical look at the role sex plays in our private and public lives,” artist Tom West, who organized the show (and is in it), writes in introduction.

Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present FLUSHING THE SYSTEM, a solo exhibition of new mixed media abstract works on canvas by Providence-based artist S.W. Dinge, curated by Robert P. Stack.

FLUSHING THE SYSTEM has an active visual language that encourages the viewer to personally connect with the work as they enter the space and are drawn from one painting to the next.  By using mixed media elements (acrylic, graphite, crayon, oil pastel, conte crayon, china marker, colored pencil and wax) and applying them to canvas, Dinge blurs the line between drawing and painting with each stroke.

“In general, I try not to prescribe to the notion of a strict concept when it come to abstract works,” says Dinge, who originally hails from the Adirondacks in Upstate New York and relocated to Providence over a decade ago.  “The idea that there could be multiple angles of interpretation intrigues me. All I can do as the artist is offer up my angle.”

For Dinge, this angle includes vast areas of calm and relative quiet interrupted by brief bursts of vigorous, sometimes aggressive creative energy.  “As I worked on these pieces, I began to see them as a representation of the creative process itself,” he shares, adding, “I can envision the plane of the canvas as time and space.”

The opening reception for FLUSHING THE SYSTEM is on Thursday, May 16 from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night Providence.  The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, June 16, 2013.
